Dr Hammond was very approachable and reassuring and exuded an air of total competence and caring. I felt at ease discussing my condition and the follow up treatment was excellent.

Dr Tobias Hammond has the professional approach that one expects to receive when you are concerned about your health. I feel privileged to have him as my consultant. You ask him a question and he answers definitively and this makes you feel assured that you are in the right hands. I also like the fact that he is looking forward with treatment for you and he makes you feel that you are his only patient. I thoroughly recommend him.

I am a junior colleague working with Mr Hammond. Over the last year I found him very pleasant to work with. He is very approachable and provides excellent leadership to his team. What I found most impressive was his passion for providing great care to his patients. He reviews all his patients daily and is closely involved with any surgical procedures on his patients. The results from his surgical procedures seem very good. I am very happy to recommend Mr Hammond as a Consultant and trainer.

Mr Hammond has recently treated me on two occasions for haemorrhoids, which he banded the first time and then again after a flexible sigmoidoscopy showed no further problems. On both occasions he was very pleasant and extremely approachable, explaining the procedure clearly and simply, and answering any question I asked. At no time did I feel any anxiety and would have no hesitation in recommending this consultant to anyone. I note that he also works from Braintree Community Hospital, and would have liked the opportunity to have been treated there had I been offered the choice.

Dr Hammond treated me with great care and understanding. His attitude was extremely professional while maintaining a personal connection with me throughout my consultations, surgery and after-care. He explained everything in as much detail as I requested and made a really difficult time in my life bearable. I believe he cared about me as a person and understood how my illness impacted on my life. His skill as a surgeon is of the highest quality and I could not praise him highly enough. I could not have asked for better care and consideration than that I received from Dr Hammond.

Profile

I am a consultant general & colorectal surgeon at Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford, Essex. I also work at Braintree Community Hospital and Ramsay Springfield Hospital.

I perform open & laparoscopic surgery for colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, diverticular disease and hernias. I have subspecialty interests in anal and pelvic floor pathology, and abdominal wall repair for complex hernias.

I graduated from Liverpool University Medical School in 1998 . I became a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2003, and a fellow in 2011. I was awarded my certificate for completion of surgical training in 2012. During this time I worked as a senior registrar at St Mark's Hospital, Harrow (a national and international referral centre for intestinal and colorectal disorders) and a laparoscopic colorectal fellowship at Colchester General Hospital.

Whilst training I undertook a 2 year period of full time research. I investigated the role of biomaterials in the management of parastomal hernias and anal fistulas. This culminated in a reasearch MD, awarded by the University of London, as well as the Colon & Rectal Disease Research Foundation Prize, by the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain & Ireland (ACPGBI). I was also granted a travelling fellowship by the Coloproctology Section of the Royal Society of Medicine.

I continue to enjoy publishing and presenting on my research areas of interest. I have been invited to review articles for the Lancet, British Journal of Surgery, Colorectal Disease, Techniques in Coloproctology and The International Journal of Surgery. I have co-authored chapters on anal fistulas for the 6th edition of Rob & Smith's Operative Surgery: Surgery of the Colon, Rectum and Anus, and for Anus: Surgical Treatment and Pathology (edited by R Cohen and A Windsor).
